Tractor trucks (prime movers) for container, flatbed and heavy-trailer haulage

A tractor truck pulls the trailer, so the fifth wheel, wheelbase and horsepower are chosen against the trailer and gross combination weight you actually run.

On the representative 6×4 build, a 420 hp Cummins ISM engine and a 12-speed FAST gearbox pull up to 55 t gross combination weight through a JOST 50# fifth wheel, the size most standard semi-trailers couple to. A 4×2 tractor at the 340 hp tier suits shorter, lighter runs where the extra driven axle of a 6×4 only adds weight and fuel burn.

Axle ratio is set against your route and trailer weight rather than left at a factory default — lower ratios favour highway fuel economy, higher ratios favour pulling power on grades. Every unit ships as an export order: left- or right-hand drive, your market's emission standard, fifth-wheel height matched to your trailer. A tractor truck ordered alongside a dump truck or low-bed trailer is a common pairing.

Before crating, the fifth wheel is greased and cycled and the clutch checked under simulated load, so a coupling fault shows up on our line rather than on your first haul.

How these tractor trucks are built

Fifth wheel sized to the trailer you run

A JOST 50# fifth wheel couples with the semi-trailers most operators already own, mounting height set against your trailer's kingpin height rather than a fixed factory setting.

Axle ratio set for your route

Lower ratios favour fuel economy and top speed on flat highway runs; higher ratios favour pulling power on grades. We set the ratio to your route rather than shipping a default.

Parts your workshop can already source

Shacman, HOWO and Dongfeng chassis carry parts counters in most export markets, and Cummins or Weichai engines are serviced widely.

Same export process as the rest of the fleet

Left- or right-hand drive, your market's emission standard, and PTO and fifth-wheel fitment matched to your trailer, set before the unit leaves the yard.

Where these tractor trucks work

  • Container haulage between port, depot and warehouse on 20- or 40-foot skeletal trailers.
  • Flatbed and low-bed trailer work, moving equipment such as a backhoe loader between sites.
  • Bulk tanker haulage, pulling a fuel or liquid tanker semi-trailer on regional routes.
  • Mine and quarry heavy-haul routes, where the 420 hp-plus tier pulls loaded trailers on grades.

Frequently asked questions

What horsepower tiers do you build?

Tractor trucks are built from around 340 hp on a 4x2 chassis for short-haul container work up to 420 hp and above on a 6x4 chassis for heavy-trailer and mine haulage. Tell us the trailer weight and route and we will recommend the tier.

Will the fifth wheel fit the trailer I already own?

Most standard semi-trailers couple to a JOST 50# fifth wheel, which is what we fit as standard. Tell us your trailer's kingpin height and fifth-wheel rating when you enquire and we will confirm the fitment or adjust the mounting height before the unit ships.

4x2 or 6x4 — which do I need?

4x2 suits shorter runs and lighter trailers on flat, formed roads. 6x4 adds a driven rear axle for heavier gross combination weights and grades, which is why most 370 hp-and-above builds are 6x4. Tell us the trailer weight and terrain and we will size the drive configuration to it.

Can the tractor truck be ordered with a trailer?

We build the tractor unit itself; if you need a matching trailer as part of the same order, tell us the trailer type and cargo when you enquire and we will confirm what can be sourced and shipped alongside it.

Tell us the trailer and route you are running

Send the trailer type, the gross combination weight you need to pull, and your destination port. We come back with a configuration sheet and an FOB or CIF price, usually within 72 hours.
